Charlotte shelter to close for weeks; pets need temporary homes

Animal Care & Control will temporarily close its satellite shelter off Remount Road in Southside Park.

Why it matters: 30 dogs and two cats need to be relocated during renovations, as of Monday morning.

State of play: AC&C is asking for people to foster, adopt or provide staycations (up to 10 days) while shelter capacity is reduced. The deadline for the Toomey shelter is July 2. Zoom in: The Toomey kennels will be closed for roughly five weeks while they undergo repairs and upgrades required for state relicensing, per AC&C. Renovations include upgrading kennel flooring and fencing.

What's next: Dogs who have not found a placement will be relocated to AC&C's main shelter at 8315 Byrum Dr. on Saturday, July 4.

  • The Toomey shelter will be closed to the public and volunteers during renovations.
  • Stop by: 2700 Toomey Ave.

What they're saying: "Every adoption, foster placement and Staycation helps make this transition easier for our dogs while we complete these much-needed improvements," AC&C director Josh Fisher said in a statement.

The big picture: Local shelters already struggle with capacity and losing 33 kennels will put an additional strain on space over the next several weeks.

Zoom out: It's also kitten season, which has brought hundreds of kittens through AC&C's doors over the last month. AC&C has waived fees for cats and kittens through July 5.
