Runners carry US flags from Boston to NYC on 9/11 anniversary

Relay for America runners are taking pair of American flags from Boston to New York City.

The big picture: The organization wants to "reclaim" the 227-mile route that two planes ultimately took the morning of the World Trade Center terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

  • It's been 25 years since the attacks killed nearly 3,000 people, including 206 from Massachusetts.

    • Zoom in: The team started out in the Public Garden Wednesday night and plan to reach Ground Zero by Friday, CBS Boston reported.

  • The route has 25 stops, 9.11 miles apart, to mark the years since the terror attacks.

    • What's next: While NYC welcomes the runners, Massachusetts leaders will read the names of the victims on the front steps of the State House in Boston Friday morning.

  • They'll continue with the annual wreath-laying ceremony in the Public Garden Friday afternoon.
