From the match prices to the parking passes to the expense of travel between host cities, the high cost of this year's World Cup has been at the center of just about every conversation.

  • Ahead of Monday's match between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, we asked fans how much they paid.
  • Peter Tañcula: The Polish native paid around $500 each for four tickets — "face value," he said.

  • The Chicago resident flew in, but is staying with friends. "Otherwise it would be another $3,000 for a hotel." Asked why he was rooting for Uruguay, he responded, "Why not?"
  • He compared this tournament to Qatar's in 2022, where "everything was easy, everything was right there. I was able to see 10 games. Here it'll be two or three because of logistics."
  • Saidul Islam: The 51-year-old Columbus, Ohio, resident became a fan of the Saudi team last December, when he returned to the country where he spent some of his childhood.

  • While in Jeddah, he happened to meet members of the national team and decided he would cheer them on despite being a Bangladeshi living in the U.S.
  • "I met the players and I saw they're so humble and nice," he told Axios. "I wasn't a big fan until then."
  • He paid $1,200 for his ticket and $800 for the flight to Miami.
  • Eduardo Corchs: The Uruguayan national traveled to Miami from Montevideo with his son as a gift for his 15th birthday.

  • Corchs paid $5,000 for a two-match ticket package that included hotel and transportation.
  • He said it's rare for a team to play two straight games in the same city. "That is why there are so many Uruguayans here."
