Pennslyvania cyclosporiasis rates rise

Pennsylvania health officials confirmed 28 cases of cyclosporiasis earlier this month, and that figure is rising.

The big picture: Although some cases of the diarrhea-inducing illness are reported each year, 2026 will be the worst year on record in the U.S. for this food-borne parasitic infection, CDC data shows.

The latest: The CDC added Pennsylvania to its official list of states in a cyclosporiasis outbreak on Friday.

The CDC estimates there are between 31 and 80 cases in Pennsylvania, the agency reported earlier this week.

Zoom in: 11 cases were identified in Allegheny County on July 14, according to the county health department.

Zoom out: Ohio has reported 2,650 cases as of Friday, second only to Michigan, where the outbreak has reached 8,176 reported cases.

Between the lines: Investigations continue to center on contaminated iceberg lettuce as a source for the outbreak.

What's next: Expect case counts to increase as additional reports come in and the state continues to investigate cases, Pennsylvania health secretary Debra Bogen said in a letter earlier this month.
