A dangerous heat wave rolls into Mass. this week

A "heat dome" is forecast to bring dangerously high temperatures to much of the eastern half of the U.S. this week.

  • The extreme heat could last through July 4 celebrations.

    • State of play: The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch across New England starting 10am Wednesday until Friday night.

  • Temperatures could reach as high as 99℉ on Wednesday and 103℉ on Thursday.
  • It could feel as hot as 111℉ with the heat index, per NWS Boston.

    • Threat level: The heat could prove dangerous for anyone outside and exacerbate heart-related conditions and other illnesses.

  • Such conditions affect "anyone without cooling/hydration as well as health systems, industries, and infrastructure."

    • Zoom out: Cities from Minneapolis and Chicago to Nashville and Atlanta will be under extreme heat risk next week, NOAA says.
