Scotland to train in Charlotte during the FIFA World Cup

Three national teams will call North Carolina home during this summer's FIFA World Cup.

Why it matters: The FIFA World Cup will be the biggest event of the year for both casual soccer fans and diehards alike. It will also put a global spotlight on North America.

The latest: Scotland is the latest team to choose North Carolina as its World Cup base camp. Charlotte FC's Atrium Health Performance Park will serve as Scotland's training site.

Zoom out: While North Carolina will not host any tournament matches, Germany and Norway will train in the Tar Heel State, along with Scotland.

  • Germany, a powerhouse that has won the World Cup multiple times, will train at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem and will stay at the Graylyn Estate.
  • Norway and Manchester City star Erling Haaland will be based in Greensboro (location TBD).
  • What's next: The tournament runs June 11-July 19.

What we're watching: Teams are still deciding where to call home during the tournament. England, for instance, recently chose Kansas City. In the past, national teams have used the Charlotte 49ers' training facilities.

  • The 49ers did not respond to Axios' request for comment.
