New COVID-19 vaccines are now available in Michigan

Why it matters: You may be wondering who should get the updated vaccine and when. Here's what you need to know.

The latest: Michigan's health department will release its 2026–27 COVID-19 vaccine guidance soon, spokesperson Lynn Sutfin said in an email to Axios.

Driving the news: The vaccines are becoming available after the FDA approved updated COVID-19 vaccines in late August for adults 65 and older — as well as young people with one or more underlying conditions.

The American Medical Association and several other medical societies recommend that all adults 19 and older get annual COVID-19 vaccines, the Free Press reports.

Michigan's guidance is expected to align with the AMA's, Sutfin said.

Zoom in: Walgreens and CVS locations in Michigan currently offer the updated COVID-19 vaccines. Henry Ford Health offices should have them within a few weeks.

Most health insurers are expected to cover the costs of vaccines.

Patients who don't meet the criteria "can consult with their pharmacist to help make an informed and shared decision based on their individual risks and benefits," a CVS spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Between the lines: There's some confusion about who should get vaccinated and when, amid national controversy over vaccine guidance from President Trump's administration.

Some states, including Michigan, have diverged from federal guidance on routine childhood vaccine schedules.

Zoom out: Fall flu season is incoming. COVID-19 infections are also increasing or likely to increase in 35 states, including Michigan, according to the CDC.
