See inside Charlotte's new mahjong studio in Oakhurst Commons

The Queen's Mahjery, Charlotte's new mahjong studio, opens Thursday in Oakhurst Commons near the Health Club and Mood House.

Why it matters: Founders Lauren Ulrey, Jennifer Ross and Patti Roth envision the space as a new third space for Charlotte. Not only will it be a place where people can gather to play mahjong, a centuries-old Chinese strategy game growing in popularity, but where people can also host baby showers or build a puzzle together.

The latest: There will be a free open house at The Queen's Mahjery from 10am to 7pm Tuesday and Wednesday.

What to expect: The space, which has ample parking, is just under 2,400 square and includes three rooms that can fit up to 17 tables total for mahjong (it can hold around 94 people for other events).

The space has a playful industrial vibe, with murals by local artist Meredith Riggins.

There's a kitchen with snacks, plus coffee and other non-alcoholic beverages that are included with your seat. You'll be able to purchase wine, beer and seltzer.

You'll also have the option to add on a personal or sharable charcuterie board from Babe & Butcher, a locally owned business, when you reserve your space.

How it works: If you have a membership, a table will always be available for you, the founders tell Axios. A membership includes the whole table, meaning you can pay for it yourself or split it with other people.

Mahjong, mats, racks, tiles and cards are provided. There will also be a retail section where you can buy your own.

A monthly membership is $295 and includes up to three guests for any booking. Reserving a table is $150, and a seat reservation is $40.

If you go: The Queen's Mahjery is at 4000 Monroe Road, Suite 110. Hours will be 10am-8pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours will be noon-6pm. The studio will be closed on Wednesday. What's next: The Queen's Mahjery team plans to add about 12 outdoor seating later this fall.

Outdoor tables, where people can split a bottle of wine or sip, on a coffee won't require a reservation but will be on a first-come, first-served basis .
