Rice University launches master's degree in artificial intelligence

Rice University will offer a master of artificial intelligence, or MAI, degree starting in fall 2027.

Why it matters: As AI reshapes industries and the workforce, universities are expanding programs to train students to build and deploy the technology.

Zoom in: The 30-credit-hour nonthesis degree is designed for students with computer science backgrounds and can be completed on campus in three semesters.

The program will prepare students for jobs including AI and machine learning engineers, AI architects and applied AI researchers.

Rice will begin accepting applications this fall.

What they're saying: "The MAI reflects Rice's commitment to developing graduate programs that respond to advances in technology and the changing needs of the workforce," Rice Provost Amy Dittmar said in the announcement.
