Tudor Place Historic House & Garden in Georgetown is running a special exhibit to celebrate America's birthday.

Why it matters: This under-the-radar museum — once home to descendants of Martha Washington — is a way for history buffs to get their 250 on without battling the crowds at the city's bigger cultural sites.

State of play: "Founding Fortunes" showcases over 60 items tied to an estate sale of Martha Washington's possessions held during the early 1800s, many of which are on view for the first time.

  • Think: Pieces of George Washington's hair, Martha Washington's bodice, a camp stool Washington used during the Revolutionary War, and a Mount Vernon punch bowl.

    • Zoom out: The museum will also host a series of 250-centric events throughout the rest of the year, like historian talks and after-hours gatherings over coffee cocktails inspired by Colonial-era meeting places.
